Corpus Cristi Sand
This high relief piece was inspired by the delicate shelves created naturally in the sand dunes at a beach. I observed that, in some areas, equally delicate plant runners seemed to dance over the surface of sand shapes. I found this image of contrasting shapes to be visually interesting, as well as a metaphor for the human condition.
The majority of this piece was constructed with fabricated steel sheet metal, with linear elements forged from round steel rod. The finish was achieved by chemically rusting the surface to create an even powdery effect. The piece was then sealed with lacquer. Subtle purple and orange pigments were added to the lacquer in order to push the rust color in different directions, causing it to advance in certain areas while receding in others.
