October Gate
This is a functional piece I created collaboratively with my friend Stephen Young. This beautiful piece is constructed entirely with classical joinery techniques and other traditional elements. Some of the classic techniques we used in this piece include tenons, rivets, structural collars, upset corners, forge-welded branching scrolls, square punched pass-through, and quatrefoils. I designed the piece to be functional and at the same time a beautiful representation of classical work.
Stephen and I created the majority of this gate over the period of one week during a class instructed by Tal Harris at the John C. Campbell Folk School in the mountains of North Carolina. I distinctly remember finishing the quatrefoils at 6:30 AM one morning while I was fresh and there were no distractions.
