Oogamy Plain
Oogamy Plain is an expressive piece, reflecting my passion for high relief and natural organic imagery. The design elicits movement through the use of negative space in the varied sizes of ring-like shapes. The density of the pattern between the ring shapes provides balance, and enhances the interest of the negative spaces. The piece casts soft shadows on the supporting panel, creating another layer of interest.
The piece is constructed from steel, using forging and fabrication techniques. The ring shapes were formed by hand from steel bar and joined using forge welding technique. The dense pattern elements are attached to the ring shapes using tenons in order to achieve the cleanest joinery. The supporting panel is constructed from sheet metal and forged round steel rods.
The piece was inspired by life and celebrating its creation on a molecular level. There is profound beauty in the transition gametes make from haploid to diploid. While certainly part of the process, it’s not just about last night.
