Violin Bench
This large representation of a violin that also serves as a park bench in a local Durham, NC park, seeks to honor longtime neighbor and inspiring music educator Dorothy Kitchen’s 40 years of work, serving as a music educator focused on violin and cello. The commissioned work, was a “History Grove” project funded through the Museum of Durham History, and was installed at 2200 West Club Boulevard, Durham, NC. Because Ms. Kitchen’s work sought diversity and was open to all Durham kids ages 5 to 18, the piece was designed to be intriguing. The piece invites children to touch, climb and generally become familiar with the instrument, with the aim of piquing interest and curiosity that might present as a life passion.
The bench was produced using forged and fabricated steel techniques, with PVC decking used for the seating area.
